Montserrat Flag Description:
The flag of Montserrat consists of a dark blue base with a British Union Jack in the top left quarter. The country's coat of arms is centered on the right hand half of the Montserrat flag. The coat of arms consists of a woman with a harp, embracing a passion cross.

Montserrat Flag Meaning:
The Union Jack represents Montserrat's ties to Britain, as the country is an Overseas Dependent Territory of Britain.

Montserrat Flag History:
The current Montserrat flag was adopted on January 25, 1999, when the coat of arms was enlarged. The Montserrat flag was originally adopted on April 10, 1909. Much of the island of Montserrat was devastated and over two-thirds of the population fled after the eruption of the Soufriere Hills volcano that began on July 18, 1995. The eruptions have continued, making large parts of the island uninhabitable.

Interesting Montserrat Flag Facts:
The coat of arms on the Montserrat flag depicts Erin (the female figure - and a symbol of freedom for Ireland). Many of the Montserrat Island's residents speak with an Irish brogue as a large number of Irish people were sent to Montserrat Island by Oliver Cromwell in the 17th century.
